Erin Louise Jones Obituary: Grand Rapids Woman Among Four Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on U.S. 131
ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI — Authorities have identified the victims in a devastating wrong-way crash that occurred early Sunday, November 2, on U.S. 131 in Allegan County. The crash claimed the lives of four people, including 38-year-old Erin Louise Jones of Grand Rapids, and left two others seriously injured.
According to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office, the collision happened in the early morning hours when a Subaru Legacy, driven by Jones, was traveling south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 131 after a wrong-way entry onto the highway.
Details of the Fatal Crash
Investigators reported that Jones had been driving southbound on U.S. 131 before exiting at 129th Avenue. She then entered the northbound on-ramp and made a U-turn at the bottom of the ramp, heading the wrong way—south in the northbound lanes.
Moments later, her Subaru collided head-on with a Ford Fusion carrying five people who were traveling in the correct direction.
The impact of the crash was catastrophic. Both drivers—Erin Louise Jones and 18-year-old Emmanuel Browning of Kalamazoo, the driver of the Fusion—were pronounced dead at the scene, along with Browning’s 18-year-old front-seat passenger.
Fourth Victim Identified as 17-Year-Old Girl
Authorities confirmed on Tuesday that a fourth person, a 17-year-old female from the Portage area, also succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Her name, along with that of another juvenile victim, has not been released at the request of the families and due to their minor status.
Two additional passengers from the Fusion sustained serious injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions have not yet been updated.
Ongoing Investigation
The Allegan County Crash Reconstruction Team continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash. Lt. Brandon Berens noted that it may take several weeks before a full report is completed.
Authorities have not yet determined why Jones entered the highway in the wrong direction. The Sheriff’s Office stated that no additional names will be released at this time, out of respect for the families involved.
Community Mourning and Road Safety Reminder
The tragic crash has deeply affected communities across Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Portage, where friends, family, and residents are mourning the loss of young lives and the devastating consequences of wrong-way driving.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of vigilance on the road, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and alertness may be reduced.
Authorities encourage drivers to report any vehicles traveling the wrong way immediately by calling 911 to help prevent future tragedies.
